We are seeking a proactive, self-driven professional experienced in engineering and construction of solar and battery storage projects at various stages of maturity, including early development, pre-construction/NTP, and construction.  This role is tailored to engineering and construction professionals that are do-ers in addition to managers, excited to operate in an entrepreneurial setting, and comfortable with a breadth of functional responsibilities.  Initially, this role will be 38DN’s only EPC and engineering employee and will be responsible for taking over management of the company’s existing consultant, equipment supplier, engineering, and contractor relationships.  The company will rely on this role to design the expansion of the company’s engineering and EPC function to support a significant increase in project development and construction volume over the coming 2-3 years.  This role will interface directly with the 38DN leadership team, as well as 38DN’s project development and project finance teams who will continue to support project engineering and construction through the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the selection process for contractors and equipment vendors, conducting comprehensive due diligence, including assessment of modules, inverters, racking, and medium-voltage equipment.

  • Negotiate and administer construction and equipment supply agreements, including management of contract assembly and execution, payment milestones, notices and change orders, safety procedures, commissioning, milestone sign off, and certificate issuance.

  • Lead design and engineering of solar and battery projects during all stages of development (early, mid, NTP), including layouts and design packages for interconnection, permitting submissions, and EPC contracting.

  • Lead the development of energy models using PVSyst, including layout and design iterations to maximize value, either directly or with the support of outside consultants.

  • Manage review of detailed construction drawings prepared by the EPC contractor.

  • Manage project budgets, construction oversight, and EPC contract milestone payments, including internal reporting and forecasting.

  • Coordinate on-site inspections and liaise with third-party providers.  This role is envisioned to be mostly office-based with support from onsite resources, except for certain circumstances when direct site visits are needed.

  • Lead weekly project progress meetings and coordinate with construction teams on project quality, budget, and schedule.

  • Effectively communicate project updates, risks, and issues both within the company and with external partners.

  • Oversee contractor and partner reporting and consolidate for 38DN management and board reports.

  • Serve as 38DN's in-house expert on project engineering, EPC contracting, and construction, offering insights and guidance across the organization, including to the project development and acquisition teams for development-stage projects.

  • Lead after-action reviews to cultivate continuous improvement and contribute to the evolution of internal operating policies and standards.

  • Following completion of construction, support handover to 38DN Asset Management.

  • Collaborate closely with developers, consultants, engineers, and other stakeholders; foster and manage relationships to ensure consistent engagement and alignment with project objectives.

  • Uphold the company's safety program standards, ensuring all projects comply with established safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • 5-15+ years of experience in solar project engineering, procurement, and construction.

  • Relevant bachelor's degree.

  • Experience with EPC and equipment supply contract negotiation and EPC contractor oversight and management.

  • Experience with solar project modeling and engineering software such as PVsyst, PVcase, Helioscope, Energy Toolbase, and CAD, and managing third party engineers.

  • Experience with project development, including site engineering for interconnection and permitting.

  • Experience supporting project acquisition and financing due diligence processes, including management of Independent Engineers and other consultants.

  • Exceptional analytical skills, with a history of managing financial, technical, and contractual aspects of construction projects.

  • Quick to adapt and eager to grow within a thriving, fast-paced environment.

  • Well-organized, vigilant, and competent in juggling multiple project details.

  • Proficient in working under pressure, adhering to deadlines, and embracing additional responsibilities proactively.

  • Outstanding communication abilities, both written and verbal, with proficiency in preparing detailed reports and presentations.

  • Collaborative spirit, a good sense of humor, and a driven, mission-oriented approach.
